And to close...Paris on the cheap

Bonjour tout le monde!

Well guys, I’m very sad to say that this is my last post on TravelFrance. But to go out with a bang I’m going to give you some information about going to Paris on the cheap. Being one of the most beautiful cities in the world, it is also one of the most expensive!!!

Accommodation is probably the most expensive thing. Unfortunately, I don’t have tips except to check out the youth hostels.

Shopping. Do your research thoroughly because there are often local markets held in Paris.

Going Out. There is a local gig guide which comes out every week. It’s written in French (obviously) but it’s still informative!!

Museums etc. If you’re a history buff, every Wednesday most museums let students and pensioners in for free. Definitely worth a look!!

The best research for travel on the web, though it may sound weird, is from Wikipedia. The information’s not spectacular, but it has several links for mot countries to their official sites. On the other hand, Lonely Planet is a great resource!!

Paris is an expensive city, but so is a lot of France when you think about it. But to me, it is a must see destination in the world. Thanks so much for reading my blog over the past 6 months. I’ve had a heap of fun. Check out the other posts on this blog: I'd like to think there's some useful information in them.

Just looking at that gorgeous picture makes you want to be there!!!
Best wishes and I hope you get to France one day.
Au Revoir

Le Lido WANTS YOU!!!

September 22nd 2006 22:21

Bonjour tout le monde!

Remember way back in March how I reviewed Le Moulin Rouge? In that article, I mentioned another cabaret place called Le Lido.

Well…Guess what? Great news!!!! Dancers are needed for Le Lido in Paris and they want Aussies!!!!

It seemed a little weird to me that breakfast television this morning kept talking about a cabaret show in Paris. Intrigued, I watched the report (Sucked in by advertising I know…) and found out a little bit more…

Le Lido is a cabaret theatre on the Champs-Elysées in Paris. It doesn’t have as grand a reputation as Le Moulin Rouge, but apparently it still puts on a great show!!!

So, if you think this is you, check out the official website and apply. A great way to work and see France I suppose!!!!

See you soon

Sailing into La Rochelle

September 22nd 2006 08:02

Bonjour tout le monde!

The first time I heard about this place, I was intrigued. It was in my Year 9 French text book. Desirée and Roger decided they wanted to go sailing at La Rochelle over their summer break and because Roger was a rich spoilt brat, off they went.

The real place though, is much more interesting, even without the love birds.

La Rochelle is a town in western France and a seaport on the Atlantic Ocean. It is the capital of the Charente-Maritime département and its harbour flows out into the Pertuis d’Antioche, a protected strait.

The town itself was founded in the 10th century and very quickly became an important harbour city. Until the 15th century, it was France’s largest port and traded mainly wine and salt.

The next major event for La Rochelle was during World War 2. The Nazis established a submarine base in the town’s main port. It became a German stronghold and was the last French city to be liberated at the end of the war. A siege took place from 12th September 1944 and lasted until Germany surrendered on May 7 1945. French troops entered La Rochelle the following day.

The climate in La Rochelle is similar to that of the French Riviera, although it is on the same latitude as Montreal in Canada and the Kuril Islands in Russia.

La Rochelle’s main attraction is the Vieux Port (or Old Harbour) in the very heart of the town. It is a great place to go out at night because of the seafood restaurants which line the shore and the beautiful walk along the harbour walls. The port is also popular for sailing because of the little inlets and canals all over the country.

A painter's paradise: Monet's Giverny

September 22nd 2006 05:52

Bonjour tout le monde!

I’ve admitted before that I’m not much of an art lover, but for me, this is a must-see. One of the most famous non war-related sites in Normandy is Claude Monet’s garden in Haute-Normandie region.

Giverny can be found on right bank of River Seine. The village is 80 kilometres from Paris and is on the border between the Normandy and the Île-de-France regions.

This beautiful village was first seen by Monet when he was staring out the window of a train. He decided to move there and rented a house until in 1890, when he had enough money to buy the house and land. He set up the gardens to inspire many of his paintings, including my favourite painting the Japanese Bridge and the water lilies.

Monet lived there in his house until his death in 1926 and members of his family are buried at the village cemetery.

The gardens have become a very popular tourist attraction in the area. For the latest information on the events at Giverny check out the link blelow.
