Allo Allo? Nancy calling
August 25th 2006 22:00
Bonjour tout le monde!
Has anyone ever seen the TV show Allo Allo? It’s this really random British comedy from the 1980s. It’s set in World War 2 in a café owned by René François Artois. Each of the episodes follows René as he tries to help the French Resistance, hide two British pilots, stay ahead of the bumbling German soldiers stationed there (one of which is flirting with him), keep his affairs with his two waitresses secret from his wife and avoid getting shot by the female only Communist Party. (Yes. It sounds exactly like war-time France under Nazi control…) [For a better explanation of the show click here.]
Anyway, there have been these ads on TV advertising Allo Allo box sets, and there’s this one line which always attracts laughter. René is speaking with the soldiers who ask him if he and his twin brother (strangely enough also called René) were originally from Nancy. And René replies “Yes. We were both Nancy boys.” (And yes, I’m sure you get the joke…)
So, having seen this ad this morning, it inspired me to write a little series on the town of Nancy. It isn’t a well-known town, so this is my attempt to raise its profile.
The little yellow dot is Nancy (this picture is licensed under the GNU Agreement and can be found at wikipedia.org)
Nancy is the capital city of the Meurthe-et-Moselle département in the Lorraine area of north-eastern France. It has a population of just under 500 000 people.
Over the next week and a bit, we’ll be travelling around Nancy, so don’t forget to come back!
That’s it for today.
À demain
