Let's go cruising: Avignon by water

June 14th 2006 23:00

Bonjour tout le monde!!
(Hello everyone)

I said this when I wrote about cruises on the River Seine, but can you think of anything better to do than spend a day (or two…or six) cruising the Rhône? I must say it would be a dream vacation. Floating casually passed the lavender fields, vineyards and the beautiful Provençal cities and villages, which line its banks. Sounds amazing, doesn’t it?

Well, when in Avignon, why not make the trip. I’ve been doing a little research into cruising and found there are heaps of companies who conduct tours around Avignon and its surrounds. They have lunch cruises, full day excursions, evening soirées and week long mini holidays.

Unfortunately, due to weather restrictions and the like, these cruises only run in brief windows throughout the year. If you’re planning to travel soon, you’ve just missed the first session, which runs from April 1 to May 30. On the other hand, the next time is the month of September.

The cruises I found (links to their sites and other useful tours etc are found in the links at the end of the post) are journeys which last an entire day (well…7.5 hours). They start at 11am and depart from Avignon. Over the course of the day, lunch is served on board. You disembark at Arles; get to spend about 2 hours wandering around, looking at the heritage sites (including Roman ruins and places where van Gogh painted!!); then, sail back to Avignon. You get an expert commentary on your journey in French and English and Spanish (on request).

To find out more information on cruises, when they’re on, how to book and contact details visit the links below:

The Avignon Tours site is linked to the sacred-destinations site from yesterday’s post. It has heaps of general info on Avignon as well as tours around monuments for land-lovers.

Have fun on the cruise. It sounds like a blast!!
À demain

(P.S - if you have troubles with the Avignon Tours link, once there hit "back to main," then press "more cities" under UK/Europe, then search Avignon. Or go to sacred-destinations.com and search Avignon tours. It should come up that way!! Obviously saving search results doesn't work. Sorry !! = )
