New Caledonia and Tour de France Wrap up
July 24th 2006 23:58
Bonjour tout le monde!
The Tour de France has now officially ended. American Floyd Landis continued Lance Armstrong’s tradition and won the Tour. This year was the first time 2 Australians finished in the Top Ten, which was a fantastic result! Robbie McEwen won his 3rd maillot vert (or green jersey). I think the great results by Aussies this year have raised the profile of the sport and perhaps, more tourists can be over in France for next year’s race.
Now that the Tour’s over, I’m going to take you to a new destination. For the next week and a bit, I’m going to show you around New Caledonia.
I suppose New Caledonia is best known for that TV ad which proclaims “New Caledonia. Vive la difference!” (This is correctly pronounced as Veave la diffERance!) I’m hoping that over the next week, I can give you a little more information about this country which is often overlooked.
I’m sure by now, many of you are wondering why I am writing about New Caledonia on a Travel France blog. Well, most people don’t know that New Caledonia is actually called a DOM (a Département d’Outre Mer), which translates as an Overseas department. France itself is divided into administrative départements, so New Caledonia is part of France.
Over the next week, I’ll give you a run down on the unique culture, lifestyle and history, which has shaped New Caledonia over time.
Hope you’ll join me then
À demain
Melinda
