Allo Allo? Nancy calling Part 9 Place de la Carriere
September 6th 2006 07:35
Allo Allo!
As well as the beautiful Place Stanislas, there are many other beautiful squares in Nancy, like Place de la Carrière.
La Place Carrière was built in the 16th century when the city’s medieval fortifications were moved. That was the last time the city was extended. It was called “Carrière” (meaning ‘course’ in English) because tournaments and other equestrian games were held there.
This Place signified the border between the Ville-Vielle and the Ville-Neuve (or Old and New Towns). It kind of sounds like Coolongatta and Tweed Heads: two towns which should be one, divided down the middle. It wasn’t until the end of the 17th century that communication was established between the two towns!! Our old friend Stanislas Leszczynski came up with the idea to unite the two sections.
I suppose that you could say today, La Place de la Carrière stands as a monument to reason: where two sections of the town have been joined together.
You can have guided tours of the Square with a pair of headphones or a real person. It’s up to you!!
Short and sweet. See you tomorrow
À demain
