Tour de France: Stage 2: Obernai to Esch-sur-Alzette
July 4th 2006 05:05
Bonjour tout le monde!!
(Hi all)
Monday July 3rd: the second day of “real competition” of the Tour de France. Today’s journey takes us from Obernai to Esch-sur-Alzette and is about 228 kilometres in length. This is the second longest stage of the Tour and contains 5 climbs (two Category 3 and three Category 4) and three intermediate sprints at Marimont-les-Benestroff, Holling and Yutz.
Obernai is a little town in Alsace, France and can be found south-west of Strasbourg on the eastern slopes of the Vosges Mountains. On its council’s website, it is described as a condensed version of Alsace [the region in which it is located] and actually looks like a really cool and cute village. It can hold about 2700 tourists. (This is a stat from their website). For more info, have a look on the Council’s tourist website, which can be found here. It has links to accommodation, events and reviews restaurants, bars and other important things…
The town in which the weary cyclists will arrive in today is Esch-sur-Alzette, which is the first stop outside French borders. Esch-sur-Alzette or (Esch-Uelzecht as it is said in Luxembourgish) can be found in Luxembourg, very close to the French border. It is the second largest city in Luxembourg and gets called Esch for short. It lies in the valley of Alzette, while Luxembourg City (the country’s capital lies about 15 kilometres to the north-east. Esch is, interestingly enough, the steel producing capital of the country.
This town has many great attractions, including the National Museum of the Resistance, which has material related to the Nazi occupation during World War 2, the Bewart Tower and a large park. The city has two cinemas, a Municipal Theatre and a converted abattoir called the Kulturfabrik, which holds the cultural centre and hosts performances.
Ok. That’s it for today.
July 4 and Stage 3 here we come!!!
À demain
