Tour de France: Stage 9: Bordeaux to Dax

July 12th 2006 00:38

Bonjour tout le monde

I must say I am disappointed about the French loss to the Italians, but it’s only soccer, so I’m not going to get too worried.

Onto the Tour de France. Stage 8 took place overnight on Sunday (that’s Australian time) and the results were ok for Australia. Frenchman Sylvain Calzati won the stage; Robbie McEwen finished 4th and still has the green jersey. In the overall standings, Tom Boonen has dropped from the Top Ten, Australian Michael Rogers is in 3rd place and Aussie Cadel Evans (from Davitamon-Lotto) is in 8th.

Stage 9 will take place overnight. It is 170 kilometres long and stretches from Bordeaux to Dax.

Bordeaux is a port-city which can be found in south-west France in the Aquitaine region. It is a wine producing centre (Bordeaux wine derives its name from the city) and is also an industrial city, supporting research in the military, aeronautical and space industries. The local university is also a renowned institution, famous for its crop research. The city is located on a branch in the River Garonne, thus it is divided into two parts: the East and West bank. Due to its charm and beautiful surroundings, Bordeaux’s fastest growing industry is tourism. There is much to see and do in Bordeaux: it is particularly known for its 18th century architecture and arts like film, music and theatre. (This is similar to lots of other French cities, I know.) A few “must see” monuments include the Musée des Beaux Arts (Fine Arts Museum), les églises (the churches) and squares around town, including Place de la Bourse and Place du Parlement. For more information, you can click here, which will lead you to Bordeaux’s official tourist website. After the cool intro, click on the English language link (or Spanish, German...as you desire)

The arrival destination is Dax: a small town in southwestern France in the Landes département. Apparently the town is famous for its spa treatments.

That’s it for today. See you tomorrow with hopefully some more fantastic Australian results!!!

À demain
