Tour de France Tour: Stage 6: Lisieux to Vitré
July 8th 2006 02:02
Bonjour tout le monde
(hi guys)
We're up to Stage 6 today. It's only been a week since I started writing about Tour de France and already I feel like a real expert!!! The results changed little for Stage 5: Robbie McEwen finished 5th and retained the Green Jersey, while Tom Boonen still wears the Yellow Jersey and maintained a 13 minute lead over 2nd placed Aussie Michael Rogers (who finished outside the Top Ten in this Stage).
Stage 6 will take us 184 kilometres (a rather short length) from Lisieux to Vitre in the north of France.
Lisieux can be found in the Calvados département in the Basse-Normandie région in France. It is found in the bottom of a valley of the Touques River on the way between Paris and Caen. Lisieux is another place rich with religious history. (I'm sorry if this isn't your thing, but France is just overflowing with châteaux {plural from of château, meaning castle} and cathédrales.
Some of the attractions of Lisieux (as listed by wikipedia) are:
-: Cathédrale Saint-Pierre - built between 1170 and the mid 13th century. Renovated and extended up to the 17th century.
-: Basilique Sainte-Thérèse - consecrated on 11th July 1954.
-: Carmel Jardin de l'Evêché - a "jardin publique" (public garden) built in first half of the 19th century
For more information, check out Lisieux's tourism website (which can be accessed in French, English and German for your convenience) by clicking here.
The arrival town after today's journey is Vitré, which can be found in the département of Ille-et-Vilaine, in Brittany. The history in Vitré stretches all the way back to Gallo-Roman times. By clicking here, you will find a comprehensive list of attractions in Vitré (the source is wikipedia.org) and a large list of external links.
That's it from me for now. Come back later today to get all the goss on Stage 6 and the info on Stage 7.
